Energy Analysis and Cost-Effective Design Solutions for a Dual-Source Heat Pump System in Representative Climates in Europe

Ground-source heat pumps are an efficient technology for heating and cooling in buildings. However, the main limitation of their widespread application is borehole exchanger’s (BHE) high investment cost. Hybridizing GSHP systems may overcome this limitation. This research work analyzes long-term energy performance a dual-source pump (DSHP) system, which uses air or ground as external heat/sink sources, three representative European climates. First, BHE cost-effective design solution proposed each climatology; then, complete analysis carried out, optimal source control parameters that best enhance system climate determined with use dynamic model DSHP developed TRNSYS. Simulations were out 25-year operation period. Results show maintains efficiency during simulated period, deviations lower than 1.7% all cases. Finally, optimization method results only slight gains (<0.35%) but stronger effect on ground/air ratio (up to 25% cold climates), reducing thermal imbalance leading consequent size length cost reduction.
